Cypress occupies a unique slot in the hardwood world: technically a softwood, but milled, sold, and used like one of the hardwoods. Its natural oils make it remarkably rot-resistant — cypress siding, decks, and boat hulls have been holding up to coastal weather for centuries without chemical treatment. It works easily, holds finishes well, and ages into a soft silver-gray when left untreated outdoors.
Cypress is built for water, weather, and time. Its rot resistance and dimensional stability make it the default choice when a project will live outdoors or in a marine environment. Inside, its warm color and grain character make it a designer favorite for paneling, mantels, and feature walls.
Cypress is the species we ship most often to builders and contractors specifying real wood for exterior projects, to boatbuilders, and to furniture makers building for outdoor use. Architects working on regional projects in the Southeast specify cypress for siding and exposed structural elements. Our cypress was used in Live Oak Bank's Wilmington headquarters — a feature you can see on our Our Work page.
